Precisely. The Ottoman Turks made it all the way to the gates of Vienna, Austria! Imagine Turkey doing that today with no military response from Europe, and that is the equivelant of saying the Crusades were unjustified, at least in principle.

"Moreover, any serious student of the Bible and history knows that the Crusades were politics wrapped in faux Christianity."

Don't be so quick to judge, and go read a bit more about the times. The kings and popes of the Middle Ages faced a 400-year-long military expansion of Islam from Arabia through northern Africa, through Spain into France, and from Palestine through Anatolia into south-eastern Europe. Without a strong, military response, William Shakespeare might have written his plays in Arabic and we'd all be dhimmis. Whatever else you think about Medieval church politics, there were some pretty sound reasons for militancy in Christianity in those days.

They killed 100 million people during peace-time

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me. John 18:37

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

For we did not follow cleverly contrived myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; instead, we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 2 Peter 1:16
