Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.

                                                                                         –Martin Luther King, Jr.

Greg’s Note: This quote was originally posted as:

I will mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.

The first sentence is actually originally attributed to a Facebook user who had added her own commentary preceding the quote. After going viral on the social networks, the quotation marks around the original quote (King’s) ended up missing, resulting in the incorrect assumption that the entire quote was attributed to King. Despite the apparently unintended combining of these two quotes, it is still a poignant message for today.
