Why Apologetics? Addressing some Issues and Comments
Two short months and 100 posts later, the harshest criticism I’ve received for my website hasn’t been from people of other faiths, but from Christians. I just wanted to take some time and explain why I started Frontline Apologetics and what I hope to accomplish with the site. There have been a lot of comments (both good and bad) and they deserve some attention.
The most common issue I have run into with the site is, “Why does God need us to defend the Gospel? Doesn’t the Gospel defend itself?” This is a great question. It’s quite true that God doesn’t need anything from us. However God’s word is more than clear, he ASKS and COMMANDS us repeatedly to defend and contend for the Gospel. I’m not sure how anyone can read the New Testament and walk away thinking that we aren’t called to this. 1 Peter 3:15 “always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.” I know “God doesn’t need a defense lawyer” may sound good, but verse after verse makes it clear God is asking and inviting you to defend the Gospel. 2 Corinthians 10:5-6 says, “We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” Here are some more verses to consider: Philippians 1:16, John 7:24, 1 Cor. 5:12, Ephesians 5:11, Acts 22:1
I’ve also had the issue brought up, “it’s the Holy Spirit that leads us into truth, so why be critical of others who might teach falsely or of unbelievers?” It is absolutely true that the Holy Spirit will lead us into truth (John 16:13) and bear witness of Christ (Romans 8:16-17). However, the primary way that God has chosen to distribute his truth throughout His church is through the body of Christ. God has entrusted us with the good news of Christ and His word and has graciously given to us preachers and teachers soundly and rightly dividing the biblical scriptures…
