A Question About Tithing

by Jacob Allee

tithing - Jesus paid it allQUESTION: “Please elaborate on the issue of tithing for the new testament believer. Many Christians today believe that it was only an Old Testament law for Jews and that it doesn’t apply in this “dispensation of grace”. They believe in giving sacrificially but not necessarily tithing. Please give me scriptures that support your viewpoint. Thanks.”

Many Christians from different camps, denominations and traditions have argued about this point. This is a secondary issue that ought not divide the true church of Jesus Christ. The concept of Tithing is of course originally an Old Testament concept. Malachi 3:8-12 is typically the passage most cited in this discussion:

“8Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. 9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. 10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. 11I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the LORD of hosts. 12Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the LORD of hosts.”

Obviously a Tithe is 10%. The Jews were commanded to give this offering to the Lord and bring their firstfruits to the “storehouse” which would have been the temple. The question as to how this relates to Christians on this side of the New Testament is a complicated one with many scholars suggesting many answers. Some of course would argue that we are to continue to tithe from our checks and give a full 10% and others would say that to demand than now is legalism and we are no longer obligated to the law.

The best answer I think we can give to this matter comes from 2 Corinthians 9:6-8…
