Did Christ Claim to be God?
by Frontline Apologetics
One of the most common arguments skeptics of Christianity use is, “Christ never claimed to be God”. I have always been perplexed by this argument on two fronts. First, this claim is simply point blank wrong.
“They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You are right in saying I am.” Luke 22:70
“Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” And Jesus said, “I am” Mark 14:61-62
“Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.” Matt. 16:20
As plain as these scriptures are, I suppose the point of contention for skeptics are the terms used, such as “Son of God“, “Messiah“, and “the Christ“. Context and prior biblical experience with the scriptures should plainly define these terms. Which brings me to my second point.

Claiming “Jesus never said he was God” indicates an inability to understand the context, the terms, and the plain language Christ used to describe himself as God. Or to be more blunt, you simply don’t know what it is you’re reading. If you fail to see the meaning and context of, “Son of God”, “the Christ”, “Son of the Blessed one”, or the “Son of Man”, then you are left with the shallow argument that Christ never said the exact words, “I am God”.
Let me use an example for why this is a hollow argument. Let’s say I’m a pilot and you and I are gathered together with a couple of your friends who don’t know me. If I start telling everyone, “I love to fly. I’ve flown planes since I was 23 years old. There’s no feeling like being in the cockpit of a airplane and being able to take off and soar wherever you wish. If you guys would like, I can fly you to whatever destination you would like.”
Now let’s say I walk away and you and your friends begin to talk. How plausible is it that your friends aren’t going to know that I’m a pilot? I never uttered the phrase, “I’m a pilot”, and yet your friends know plainly from my language, the abilities I’ve attributed to myself, and my context that I’m claiming to be a pilot…
