If Christ Has Not Been Raised…

guest blog by John Guidone

In 1Corinthians 15:14, the Apostle Paul stated “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is useless and so is your faith.” Reflecting on the truth of that passage gives rise to other realities that would have to logically follow if Christ has not been raised from death and is not alive. If Christ has not been raised, then: Untold millions of people have believed in a hoax for over 20 centuries.

If Christ has not been raised, then: The disciples and other original Christ followers, fabricated his appearances and then died willingly for what they knew was a lie.

If Christ has not been raised, then: Christ essentially committed suicide by not denying his claims to deity when he had the opportunity and willfully allowed himself to be crucified.

If Christ has not been raised, then: Christ was not really a great person and moral teacher. Instead he was history’s greatest deceiver and lunatic. Furthermore, his historically recorded feats and healings were all fabricated.

If Christ has not been raised, then: Paul lied about Christ appearing to him on the road to Damascus and inexplicably chose to suddenly live the life of a tentmaker/ missionary, because he wanted to experience the same persecution he inflicted on Christians before his conversion.

If Christ has not been raised, then: The tomb was not empty despite all evidence to the contrary and the scholarly consensus.

If Christ has not been raised, then: The tomb was empty but that was only because the Roman guards watching the tomb fell asleep in the middle of the night while the disciples moved the heavy stone in front of the tomb and stole the body.

If Christ has not been raised, then: All non-believers who converted, Jews and Gentiles alike, had the exact same hallucination that they saw the risen Christ, many of them at the exact same time.

If Christ has not been raised, then: There is no hope for the afterlife or ultimate meaning to human existence.

If Christ has not been raised, then: The Pharasitic Jews and the soldiers of the Roman empire during the first century were unable to stop the resurrection lie and the growth of Christianity because the disciples and Paul were too elusive and persuasive. After the Romans finally murdered all of the disciples but John, they still could not contain the peasant converts that were left behind.

If Christ has not been raised, then: God deliberately allowed the largest group of his creatures in history to believe in a false God and therefore condemning them to eternal separation in Hell.

If Christ has not been raised, then: Christians should be pitied above all people and should be the object of a compassionate outpouring from the missionary enterprises of other religions and non-theistic belief systems.

If Christ has not been raised, then: Special revelation of God’s character or attributes to his creatures through answered prayer, the Bible, unexplained medical cures, near death experiences and life’s changing circumstances are just delusional experiences by millions of people.

As I review these inevitable realities, I am struck by how much harder it is to believe that Christ has not been raised than to believe he has been. From this angle it’s clear that it takes more faith not to believe than to believe.
