Q&A 29: Why Do You Believe in God in the Absence of Good Arguments?

by Max Andrews

Question: Why do you believe in God when the Genesis creation account and the bible have been discredited? Why do you believe when there are no good arguments that don’t have some sort of counter argument? There is not one irrefutable proof or argument for God whether it be from archeology, history, textually,  philosophy, theology, prophecy, science, mind, miracles and the supernatural. Not one. How can it be true if nothing stands up to critical thinking? Why believe? – Luis

Answer: Hi Luis,

I usually don’t respond to questions like these since they aren’t very substantive. You’ll see that I will end up disagreeing with many of your presuppositions you build into your question. Most of them are loaded questions. So, I’ll go through your questions and unload them for you. However, I did choose your question because they’re very fundamental questions that give fundamental answers. Every once in a while it’s nice to be simple about things.

Why I believe in God… I believe in God because God gave me the gift of grace and salvation. To be completely honest, I would not believe in God had I not been born again. That’s why I believe in God. Now, as an evidentialist, it was this experience of salvation and the witness of the Holy Spirit that brought me to belief. But, as I’m sure you may know, there are other good reasons for belief in God that supplement my belief.

So, let’s go through your questions.

Why do you believe in God when the Genesis creation account and the Bible have been discredited? Have they? I would beg to differ with you on this. I’m a progressive creationist and I don’t think the creation account is meant to be a scientific blueprint for cosmogony and planetary evolution. How would you go about discrediting this literary work?

Concerning the Bible… I’d be interested in what you could tell me about Plato, Homer, or Alexander the Great. Well, the textual reliability of the Bible is much, much better than those three individuals. Let’s let the facts and evidence speak for themselves…
