I’m that Atheist your Mom warned you about

by Ryan Moore

I was walking back to my dorm from class the other day and I saw a bumper sticker on the back of a truck. The bumper sticker read, “I’m that atheist your mom warned you about.” Sadly, I think this bumper sticker is false when it comes to most Christians. I’m not convinced most parents are warning their children about the atheist students and professors who are trying to strip them out of their Christian convictions. I’m not convinced most churches are training the youth in apologetics so that the atheist students and professors do not talk them out of their faith. Some parents and churches do train their students to give a defense for the hope, but most do not. I wish this bumper was true in more cases. I really do.

Dear Parents,

I’m begging you. I’m begging you to teach your children Bible doctrine and apologetics. This is your responsibility. You are the first theologian your child will ever study. Be a good one. Be one that is worthy to learn from. Many college students are talked out of their faith every year at college. If you are not training your child in Bible doctrine and apologetics and your child walks away from Christianity when they are at college because they do not think Christianity is true anymore, do not be surprised. Do not be flabbergasted. Do not blame only the local church. You could have made sure this did not happen. This is a little blunt, but I do not apologize for it. These things need be said. If you have not ever studied apologetics before, it is time to learn. I want to point out that college students who walk out of the faith do not only walk away from the faith do to intellectual reasons, sometimes people do not want God to exist. They have a cosmic authority problem. However, by training your students in Bible doctrine and apologetics you have drastically eliminated the chances of your child walking away from the faith do to an intellectual reason. Please parents, I’m begging you. Take this seriously. Don’t just warn your kids, train them…
