You are an APOLOGIST: 3 things that you are that prove it
by Tony Vance
I think apologetics is one of the most important needs in the church today. Matter-of-fact, J. Warner Wallace once said, “the world needs a million “one dollar” apologists even more than it needs one more “million dollar” apologist.”[i] This is something I totally agree with- we need more, what I call, ‘everyday apologists’. For those who are unaware, apologetics is the discipline of ‘defending the faith’, it comes from two very important passages, one that states; “…in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you,”[ii] and also, “and every proud thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.”[iii]
We see many great apologists active today. Daily, I become aware of new ones that are doing great work in the field of apologetics. Still, even though men like William Lane Craig, J. Warner Wallace, and Ravi Zacharias are working in the ministry of apologetics and we see their great work, anyone can use apologetics. I would actually argue that apologetics is a field all believers should be practicing, even if only once in a while. The push-back I have seen usually sounds like, “I’m no philosopher, I can’t do apologetics,” or, “doesn’t one have to be a theologian?” I even have some who say, “only preachers can do apologetics, right?” Well, I think there may be some truth in what they said, one should be a philosopher, theologian, and preacher to be an apologist…and you are!
I know that there are some now screaming “NO,” at the screen, “I am no philosopher, theologian, or preacher!” I beg to differ. I hope to show that you are indeed, a philosopher, theologian, and preacher. I also think everyone is an apologist, and I think the three qualifications that have been described here are valid, and everyone possesses these qualities, as well. This article is going to be an attempt to show how that is true, and how we can be better at all of them…
