How Could a Good God Send Anyone to Hell?

“There is one very serious defect to my mind in Christ’s moral character, and that is that he believed in hell. I do not myself feel that any person who is really profoundly humane can believe in everlasting punishment.”1 Bertrand Russell isn’t alone in this sentiment either. Lots of people find the very idea of hell repugnant and beyond the character of a loving God.
Do they have a point? Is it overly harsh or unfair of God to consign people to hell for all eternity? No, it’s not. In fact, I think it’s quite the opposite. But before I get into why, let me first lay some ground work…
