What is the Gospel?

The Gospel is the most important and powerful message ever given to man by God. It literally means “good news.” It is only through this message that man can be eternally saved.

Or as Paul states in Romans 1:16:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith,[e] as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

So the Gospel is the power of God for salvation for all people!

So what is it? What is the Gospel?

1. Cor. 15:1-5

“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you – unless you believed in vain.”

“For I deliver to you as of first importance what I also received:

that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.”

The gospel is given by Paul as such:

1. Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures (Fulfilled OT prophesy: Isaiah 58:8-10).
2. He was buried (evidence that He died).
3. He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures (Fulfilled OT prophesy: Psalm 16:10).
4. He appeared (His appearances are evidence that He was raised).

Removing the evidence for Christ’s death and resurrection, what are we left with? What is the gospel in its most basic form?:

* Christ died for our sins
* He was raised on the third day.

Though this is simple in form, we don’t want to over simplify it. People often need to know what this means, why we need it, and how to respond to it.

What is involved?

1. Problem: The Fall & Sin
2. Solution: The Gospel (Life, Death and Resurrection)
3. Response: Believe in Jesus Christ as Lord! Turn from your sins and put your faith and trust in Christ Jesus alone for salvation!
4. Results: Reconciliation with God: Forgiveness of sin, Holy Spirit, Christ’s righteousness credited to the believer, eternity with God in the new heaven & earth!

Brothers and Sisters, it is important that we know the Gospel. Though the Gospel is the power of God for salvation, there is an immaterial war raging around us trying to distort, muzzle, redefine, and destroy it. This battle of ideas often happens within our minds, so we must be strong in the Lord, put on our spiritual armor, and know how to accurately articulate, share, reflect, and defend the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:10-13, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”
